Be Confident - From 'Your Head' to Your Toes!

23rd September 2011

“For most of my adult life I have had a short hairstyle. Layered, cut into the neck with colour/highlights. A very easy style to manage and I generally ‘like what I see'.

“Over the last few weeks, I have let my hair grow because I was fed up with the same look and fancied having a change. I go through this process every few years and decided that I would grow my hair long enough for a short ‘bob’.

“I have to admit that, as always, I reached the point where my hair was totally unmanageable, had no style and looked pretty awful. So, yesterday, I had it all chopped off again and I am back to the ‘old me’.”

“When I say the ‘old me’ – I mean that in an holistic sense. During my 40’s, 50’s and now my 60’s, I have always felt that if my hair looks good, my confidence and self esteem increase. It is amazing how hair can make such a difference – but it does.”

“There is something about being recognised for ‘who I am’ as well as ‘what I am’. I am a young-at-heart 64 year old who enjoys dressing in a modern style, colourful with glitzy earrings and funky beads. I enjoy making up - in fact, I won’t open the door to anyone until my eyes and hair are done!”

“Over the last few weeks, I have had my hair ‘on my mind’, knowing that it didn’t look as groomed as usual even though I spent considerable time trying to make it look stylish. This feeling of ‘not looking like me’ had a big impact on how I felt and dipped my confidence.”

“Your ‘crowning glory’ is really important. Get it right and you will “LOOK GREAT, FEEL GREAT!

"It is time to de-clutter the wardrobe – again"!

 15th September 2011

"I love the autumn and today has been one of those beautiful, clear, warm days when I think about ‘de-cluttering’ my wardrobe to lay down the spring/summer wear and make room for autumn/winter."

"I really do look forward to bringing out the clothes I have forgotten about and always intend to fill a charity bag with spring/summer ‘stuff’ that, for whatever reason, I don’t like or need any more."

"Sounds a reasonable thing to do, bearing in mind that most women have items in their wardrobe that were bought in a sale and they hang in the wardrobe with the label still attached."

"So, I entered into this task with gusto, determined to break my habit of saying to myself “I will hang on to that - just in case."

"Just in case of what? What is it that prevents us from throwing out clothes that we haven’t worn (in my case) for 5 years? I have a variety of short, medium and full length skirts. Jeans, crops and trousers. Short, medium and long jackets/coats.  Short and long dresses. At my retired stage in life, when am I going to go to wear all this stuff!"

"The task completed, I have to admit to . . . . . giving the charity shop lots of footwear because I had no choice! My high heels hurt my ankles and the boots, being high in the leg, are tight around my calves."

"I lingered for a long time over clothes, knowing that I should get rid or lots of stuff but decided that it is best to hang on to them. I really did intend to bless the charity shop with some items but, everything is now back in the wardrobe - just in case!"

De-stress your face with the "Angels Touch"

10th July 2011

I have very limited experience of therapies, never having had a massage but remember a session of reflexology many years ago which I really enjoyed.

Neal’s Yard provide a range of therapies in Bath and I recently had the pleasure of meeting Caroline Josling who is a registered Aromatherapist and Rejuvanessence practitioner.  We chatted over coffee about her practice and I arranged to visit her at Neal’s Yard to have a session in Rejuvanessence Facial Energy Release.

Rejuvanessence is a unique holistic therapy sometimes known as the “Angels Touch”.  It includes gentle, very precise massage of the 91 - yes, ninety one! - muscles in the face, neck, skull and shoulders whilst also working on facial connective tissue to make it more elastic and flexible.

Using fingertips, Caroline’s extremely light hypnotic touch works on lymph drainage, acupuncture points and meridians, releasing blocked energy thus relieving headache, jaw, neck and shoulder pain. My session lasted 70 minutes during which time I felt totally rested. At the end of the session, my facial muscles were relaxed, my face appeared fuller and wrinkles less evident.

This was the first of a series of sessions and I recommend anyone to visit Caroline to experience this wonderful therapy . . . . before considering Botox!

Caroline is based at Neal’s Yard in Bath and can be contacted on: www.carolinejosling.com

Shopping for clothes is great fun, especially when you make it ‘personal’!

30th May 2011

“If you have never experienced Personal Shopping, or even thought about it, let me give you my take on it and I am sure you will want to give it a go.”

"The Personal Shopping Suite at Debenhams in Bath is a classy, relaxed, private space in which ladies (and men) can enjoy the luxury of having fashion experts select items in store from the various collections and bring them to you to try on."

"On arrival, you will be given a questionnaire to complete by a member of the Personal Shopping Team. This is not an onerous task – just enough information for them to gauge what style and colours you like.  Whilst you sit with a glass of wine, tea or coffee, your Shopper is busy collecting items from across the store which they are confident will be right for you.”

“I can’t possibly wear that” I say as an armful of brightly coloured clothes – some with horizontal stripes -  appear on the arm of the Shopper.   “I thought horizontal stripes enhanced the body shape to make you look wider.”

“Putting my trust in the experts, I try on a sweater with grey and purple horizontal stripes and a belt that sits on the hips. “I don’t wear belts either, for the same reason”, I say.

“Well, what I surprise I had.  The jumper looked great and I even liked the belt.  The Shopper’s tip was to sit the belt low on the back and wear the buckle as a ‘V’ shape over one leg.  It really works and is extremely flattering.  Needless to say, I bought it!”  I have also bought a gorgeous red, white and black suit – the skirt having horizontal stripes.

“This service is free and a consultation lasts around one and a half hours.  One aspect I loved was that, having an expert choose clothes for me, I was not getting hot-and-bothered  getting dressed and undressed in search of something that I like.   With the vast choice of fashion items available to us, we tend to focus on what we feel is right for us and dismiss wonderful items on the aisles that are screaming at us to try them on.”

“As part of our “LOOK GREAT, FEEL GREAT” Spring 2011 programme, participants all experienced Personal Shopping at Debenhams and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”

“So, why not give it a try.  We will be running another “LOOK GREAT, FEEL GREAT” programme in the Autumn and it would be great to take you along with us on a journey of fashion discovery.”
